| Caerphilly completed their second victory of the season over first Asda Welsh League Division 1 East newcomers Llantrisant, only this time it was the WRU Mid District cup.
End to end action in the first 20 minutes only produced stalemate, as both sides measured themselves looking for an opening. It was Caerphilly who achieved this first. A good kick ahead deep into the Llantrisant in goal area. Forced to go over the dead ball line, Caerphilly were awarded a scrum on the 5 mtr. From this platform Chris Thomas came off his wing in a training ground move. With the defence scrambling wide, Thomas dissected the tacklers to score under the posts. Dean Watkins added the conversion giving the visitors the lead. Llantrisant mounted their own attack. During a drive on the Caerphilly line, a penalty was awarded for entering the ruck illegally. Opting for the lineout, the Llantrisant forwards crossed the goal line to record their first score on 37 minutes from David Owen. A knock on from the restart gifted Caerphilly the ball. Llantrisant entered the ruck from the side and Watkins was given the opportunity to extend their lead, which he took gracefully. On the stroke of half time, a good break through the centre by Lee Mullane produced a try in the corner from Rhys Watkins and Caerphilly concluded the first half with a 7-15 lead. The second half was a lot scrappier than the first. A penalty on 50 minutes from Watkins gave Caerphilly an 11 point lead, which was cancelled out by Worgan on 13 minutes as Caerphilly were penalised on the half way line. Playing with 14 men Caerphilly held out against some ferocious attacking by Llantrisant, with the upper hand in the scrum. The game was in the balance until the 77th minute when some good attacking from the visitors resulted in a drop goal by Rhys Edwards securing the Caerphilly win. |
